Copyright Law in the Digital Age: When Can I Use That?

Anyone with an internet connection and a smartphone has seemingly infinite opportunities to infringe the copyrights of others. When can you paste that picture into your PowerPoint? Or use that video on your website? This presentation will provide a basic understanding of fundamental copyright law concepts: What is protected by copyright law? When does a work become protectable? Do I need a license, and if so, how do I get one? What is “fair use”? Isn’t everything on the internet in the “public domain”? Even if I infringe someone’s copyright, is the owner really going to sue me, or even find out about it? Please join us as we explore these issues and many others, including how to limit copyright infringement liability for you, your employer, and your clients.

Mike Regitz and Dustin Mauck are shareholders at intellectual property boutique RegitzMauck in Dallas. Before founding RegitzMauck, Mike and Dustin spent a combined seventeen years practicing intellectual property law. They are experienced litigators who have represented clients in disputes involving patent infringement, copyright infringement, trademark and trade dress infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and unfair competition claims. Mike and Dustin are graduates of the SMU Dedman School of Law, and are licensed to practice in Texas, various federal courts, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Also listen to a presentation of the results of our survey of chapter members.

This meeting will start at 6:30 PM at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites DFW West, 820 Thousand Oaks Drive, Hurst TX 76054.
